Getting started with Garden Trains.

Our Train Shop is situated in the Dandenong's east of Melbourne. We sell  Garden Trains, Coins, Bulbs and  Gardening books.

Our train shop is open  on an appointment basis from Tuesday to Saturday between 10 am and 3pm. Whilst we are flexible, we don't take appointments on Sunday.

We have been selling Garden Trains  for over 32 years and  have considerable experience in setting up a train layout in the garden.

We are aware of many of the pitfalls that allow us to give sound advice based on our personal experiences.

Garden Trains are very popular in overseas gardens. They are easy to run, affordable and offer a great deal of entertainment for friends and family.

The weather proof track  can be permanently laid in the garden. It consists of code 332 brass rail set on ultra violet safe plastic sleepers with a gauge of 45mm between the rails. We own the tooling for the sleepers that comes with the label 'Trains for the garden.com', which is
manufactured in Australia and marketed as AusRail . To enhance the realism the rail can be laid on a bed of quarter-minus screenings.

In the top brands locomotives, carriages and wagons are made of automotive quality plastics which enables them to be used outdoors and to withstand weathering. (However it is not advisable to leave locomotives  or rolling stock permanently out in the weather).

The locomotives run from a 240 volt power controller which should be set up indoors in either the garage or a shed with power available. The power supply from the controller is between 17-24 volts similar to that used to set up low voltage garden lighting.

The most economical way of delivering the power to the track from an under cover power supply and controller, is by the using  5 or 7 core trailer wire, (also available from our shop).

Garden trains are certainly fun for the whole family. Your garden becomes the scenery with natural rocks, rockery plants and miniature bulbs enhancing a rather nostalgic extension to the garden.

Certainly a great way to bring family and friends together with a common interest!

The idea of a train running through a garden landscaped with living miniature plants, natural rock features, and real water is very appealing.

LGB or Piko starter sets are the most popular way to enter the hobby.  And most of the Starter sets available contain everything necessary to get you going. They represent good value for money compared to purchasing the items separately.

Most sets contain a locomotive, several coaches or wagons, a circle or oval of track and an Australian approved Power supply and a Control Box. Depending on your budget some of the sets  also include extra features such as smoke units and realistic sound in the locomotives.

In normal times we hold "Train days" at our nursery where you can enjoy our outdoor train display and garden. If you would like to receive notifications concerning these events please send us your email address.
